Fun Historic Facts and Trivia
• North Carolina received so much attention during her fitting out and trials that she won the enduring nickname “The Showboat”.
• Initially her propulsion was especially problematic. Vibration was so severe that the aft decks were virtually uninhabitable.
• Batter Up! Sports were serious on North Carolina. The ship had her own softball, baseball, basketball and boxing teams.
“Field Days” meant intense ship cleaning from top to bottom. As reward for hard work teams will have special events like trap and pistol shooting, knot tying, tug of war, wrestling and boxing.
“Smokers” were recreation nights on the fantail showcasing wrestling and talent shows. The night will end with a movie and ice-cream.
• Aviation Division had the most sought after jobs (its crew didn’t have to clean the ship). Cooks will bring cake and pies in exchange for aluminum, chrome and stainless steel they will use to make knives and rings. One of the greatest reward for cooks was a 3 hours ride on the patrol flights over Casco Bay and Maine.
