Kidstory Wonderland at Charleston Museum
Posted By ShoutCarolina,Date: 04.14.2009Got Fun? At Charleston Museum downtown children love playing with exciting hands-on exhibits about the rich Lowcountry culture and natural history.
America’s First Museum, was founded in 1773, and is open daily 9AM - 5PM (1 - 5PM on Sunday). Admission is $10 adults, $5 children 3-12 and free for those 2 years and under.
What’s fun to do for kids
• Dress up in colonial clothes, play checkers and have a proper tea party inside the beautiful Georgian style, Heyward-Washington house replica.
• Turn on the lighthouse and learn about the fragile coastal ecosystem.
• Play with cool African drums and elaborate doll houses from 19th century.
• Guess that bird song! It is a hawk, wren, or a blue jay?
• Weave a beautiful quilt.
• Learn how to tie a 8 knot and navigate like a pirate. Hear the fantastic sea captures of famous Carolina Pirates: Calico Jack Rackham, Stede Bonnet, Charles Vane and the most gruesome of all, Blackbeard!
Cool bones, interesting facts and historic trivia
• The giant crocodile Gavialosuchus Carolinensis lived 28 million years ago and was the largest reptile in South Carolina. This is a cast made from a skeleton discovered in the 1970s in Charleston in almost immaculate form.
• The Leatherback sea turtle, the largest of all living turtles can reach up to 6 feet in length and 2000 pounds in weight. Its shell is made from numerous bones and is covered by a leathery soft skin, hence the turtle’s name. This specimen was discovered in the Charleston Harbor in 1958.
• Did you know that boys wore dresses until 5 years old when they’re “upgraded” to breaches? This was a time of family celebration to welcome the new “little man”.
• “Toys are us” in Charleston! Kids made toys from anything they could find around the house: dolls from rags and corn husks, hoops from wooden barrels and whistles from willow branches.
Here is a virtual tour of the cool KidStory and Natural History exhibits:
Children take your parents to the Charleston Museum! While you have a blast playing inside Kidstory they can check out hundreds of Charleston photos, artifacts and authentic notes from the Revolutionary and Civil War era.

So excited to visit the museum and houses of Charleston. Got my family membership on Groupon for just $30 which is awsome because now we can afford to go for a few hours at time in (due to attention span and meal times) and still go back w/o paying again.
Weblink should take you to the groupon deal. - http://www.groupon.com/r/uu1337751
