Charlotte Nature Museum fun things to do with kids at Freedom Park

At the Charlotte Nature Museum, located inside beautiful Freedom Park, children can walk among fluttering butterflies, observe live animals in Creature Cavern, buzz by Insect Alley or just hang out in Our Big Backyard.

Admission is $6 (free for members and kids under 2). The museum is open Tuesday to Friday 9AM to 5PM, Saturday 10AM to 5PM and Sunday noon to 5PM. Closed on major holidays.

Charlotte Museum Highlights

At the Creature Cavern you can come close to a variety of native North Carolinian animals. From Peetie the opossum to Nelly the barred owl, from baby rat snakes to turtles and stinks. See a snakes Hibernaculum up close…it’s crowded in here!

Immerse into the colorful world of delicate butterflies. Watch them sip nectar from flowers or take a first flight as they emerge from their chrysalises.

Special programs and fun things to do outdoor
Anytime you visit the museum you can walk the Paw Paw Nature Trail in the 100-year-old Freedom Park forest. Little ones will be delighted to join Grandpa Tree in the Nature Dome for “nighttime” learning by the “campfire.”

Creature Features are special programs held one Saturday a month and include crafts, puppet shows, storytelling and refreshments. Call (704) 372 - 6261 ext. 605 for more information. Here is the events schedule for the rest of the year.

• Pet Pals - August 15, 10AM – 1PM
Celebrate cats, dogs and many other cute companions and find out what it takes to become a great pet parent.

• Rat Tales - September 19, 10AM – 1PM
From rabbits to squirrels get close to some furry friends and make fluffy crafts.

• Spooky Spiders and Creepy Crawlers - October 31, 10AM – 3PM
It’s a hauntingly good time . . . learn about animals that go bump in the night. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes.

• Turkey Talk - November 21, 10AM – 1PM
Get up close to wild turkeys and learn all about the bird of the season.

• Wonders of Winter - December 19, 10AM – 1PM
Find out which animals love the chilly weather and who prefers to sleep through the winter.
