We recently discovered another outdoor gem in Charlotte: The Botanical Gardens at UNC. The gardens consist of the McMillan Greenhouse (home to carnivorous, cactus, tropical, orchids and primitive plants), and two large outdoor gardens that include anything from evergreens to camellias to wildflowers and rhododendron. During Thanksgiving holiday weekend, my daughter and I spent a delightful afternoon inside the picturesque Cheraw State Park (one of the largest in South Carolina), located minutes from the historic downtown. Admission is free. The park is open year around 7AM to 6PM (9PM in the summer). Office hours are 11AM-5PM daily.

The redesigned Discovery Place is one of the coolest science museum on the East Coast. There is something for everyone to experience. Admission is $12 for adults, $9 for kids 2-13 and free for those 2 and under.
